One of the most common things I hear from dog owners is:
“They’ve never done this before.”
Whether it’s barking at other dogs, growling around food, becoming anxious when left alone, or reacting to visitors, behaviour changes often feel sudden.
But the truth is that behaviour rarely comes out of nowhere.
Most of the time, what looks like a sudden change is actually the final stage of something that has been building quietly for days, weeks, months, or even years.
Dogs are constantly communicating with us. The challenge is that their earliest signs are often subtle. A quick glance away. A little hesitation. A slight increase in distance. A moment of tension that lasts only seconds.
These signs are easy to miss.
The bark, growl, lunge, or meltdown isn’t usually the beginning of the story. It’s simply the first part we notice.
In this week’s episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, I explore why behaviour develops gradually, how stress and experiences accumulate over time, and why understanding the early signs can completely change the way we support our dogs.
If you’ve ever felt confused by a behaviour that seemed to appear overnight, this episode will help you see things from your dog’s perspective.
