Could your dog have separation anxiety?

Many people assume separation anxiety means a dog that destroys the house or barks all day. Sometimes it does. But often, the signs are far more subtle.

Your dog might:
• Follow you from room to room.
• Become unsettled as soon as you pick up your keys or put your shoes on.
• Bark, howl or whine shortly after you leave.
• Pace, pant or drool when left alone.
• Scratch at doors or windows.
• Refuse food or enrichment that they would normally enjoy.
• Have toileting accidents despite being fully house trained.
• Greet you as though you’ve been away for weeks, even if you’ve only been gone for a few minutes.

The important thing to remember is this…

Separation anxiety is not disobedience, stubbornness or a lack of training. It is a panic response. Your dog isn’t trying to manipulate you. They’re struggling because they genuinely don’t feel safe when they’re alone.

That’s why telling a dog to “just get used to it” rarely works. Repeated exposure to something they fear doesn’t teach them that it’s safe. More often, it reinforces the fear, making each absence feel just as overwhelming as the last.

If you’re unsure whether your dog has separation anxiety, start by gathering information rather than guessing. A simple camera can reveal what really happens after you leave, and that information is often the first step towards understanding what your dog is experiencing.

The sooner you identify the problem, the sooner you can begin helping your dog feel calm, confident and safe when home alone.

If any of these signs sound familiar, I’d be happy to help you work out whether separation anxiety is the cause and explain what effective, science-based support looks like.
