Why Your Dog Isn’t “Over It” Yet

Have you ever looked at your dog after a stressful event and thought, “That happened hours ago, why are they still reacting?”

It’s a common question, and it’s one of the biggest misunderstandings in dog behaviour.

Many of us assume that once the trigger has disappeared, the stress disappears too. The other dog has gone. The fireworks have stopped. The visitor has left. Surely everything should be back to normal.

But stress doesn’t work like that.

A dog’s body doesn’t instantly return to calm the moment a stressful event ends. Just like people can feel shaken after a frightening experience, dogs can carry the effects of stress long after the original trigger has disappeared.

In this week’s episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, I explore why stress lingers in the body, how it influences behaviour hours or even days later, and why expecting immediate recovery often leads to frustration and misunderstanding.

You’ll learn why behaviour rarely exists in isolation, how stress can accumulate over time, and why recovery is just as important as training.

If you’ve ever wondered why your dog seemed “fine yesterday” but struggled today, this episode will help everything make a lot more sense.
