Why Some Dogs Struggle to Switch Off, And Why It Is Not “Bad Behaviour”

Does your dog seem to stay switched on long after the exciting moment has passed?

Maybe they pace after a walk, stay hyper alert after visitors leave, struggle to settle in the evening, or seem unable to fully relax even when the house is quiet. It can be exhausting to live with, and if you are going through it right now, you are not alone.

In this week’s episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, I’m talking about why some dogs need help switching off, what over arousal really looks like, and why recovery matters just as much as the behaviour we see in the moment.

This is such an important conversation because too many dogs are labelled as naughty, stubborn, over the top, or badly behaved, when in reality they are struggling with regulation. They are not giving you a hard time. They are having a hard time.

In the episode, I break down why some dogs do not naturally self regulate well, how arousal can linger in the body, and why calm is not always something a dog can simply “choose” without support. I also explain why punishment and harsh handling do not create genuine calm at all. They often create shutdown, confusion, or more stress, which is the exact opposite of what these dogs need.

If you have ever said, “My dog just cannot settle,” this episode is for you.

You will come away with a clearer understanding of what may be happening inside your dog, why rest and recovery should be taken seriously, and how positive reinforcement can help dogs learn the skills they need to feel safer and calmer in everyday life.
