Some dogs look calm on the outside but they are not actually coping.
They are suppressing.
This is one of the biggest misunderstandings I see when supporting dog guardians through behaviour work online. A dog stops barking. Stops reacting. Stops growling. It feels like progress. But sometimes what we are seeing is not confidence. It is silence.
There is an important difference between a dog who feels safe and a dog who has learned that reacting no longer works.
Research in canine behaviour science consistently shows that behaviour is driven by emotional state. When we improve how a dog feels we improve how they behave. When behaviour is reduced without emotional support the stress underneath can remain and sometimes increase.
