If I told you that someone had celebrated being able to leave their dog for just five minutes, you might wonder why.
Five minutes doesn’t sound like much.
It’s enough time to walk to the end of the road.
To post a letter.
To put the bins out.
To pop next door.
Most people wouldn’t even think about it.
But if you share your life with a dog experiencing separation anxiety, five minutes can feel like climbing a mountain.
Recently, one of my clients reached exactly that milestone.
Five minutes.
And we celebrated it.
Not because the goal was only five minutes, but because of everything those five minutes represented.
It Was Never Just About The Timer
When we first started working together, our baseline wasn’t measured in minutes.
It wasn’t even measured in one minute.
It was measured in seconds.
Every departure had to be carefully planned.
Every exercise was designed to help the dog feel emotionally safe rather than simply testing how long they could cope.
Some days were fantastic.
Other days reminded us that behaviour is never a straight line.
There were pauses because of heatwaves.
There were holidays.
Life happened.
Training adapted.
There were moments when progress seemed to stall.
But throughout it all, one thing remained the same.
We never rushed.
We listened to the dog.
Five Minutes Means Freedom
Those five minutes represent far more than numbers on a timer.
They represent hope.
Hope that one day you might go to the gym without rushing home.
Hope that you might finally enjoy a meal out.
Hope that you might pop to the supermarket without asking somebody else to stay with your dog.
Hope that your world can slowly begin expanding again.
That’s what separation anxiety steals.
Not just from the dog.
From the whole family.
Progress Isn’t Perfect
One of the biggest misconceptions about separation anxiety training is that progress should happen in a straight line.
It rarely does.
Some days your dog surprises you.
Other days they remind you they’re still learning.
That isn’t failure.
It’s learning.
Our job isn’t to chase bigger numbers.
Our job is to help the dog genuinely feel safe when they’re alone.
Sometimes that means increasing the duration.
Sometimes it means repeating a successful exercise.
Sometimes it means making the session easier because life has filled your dog’s emotional bucket.
Every decision is based on emotion, not the stopwatch.
Why Positive Reinforcement Matters
There are still people who believe dogs simply need to “get used to it.”
Sadly, that approach often makes things worse.
Separation anxiety isn’t stubbornness.
It isn’t attention-seeking.
It isn’t manipulation.
It’s fear.
Fear isn’t resolved through punishment or forcing a dog to cope.
Fear changes when the dog repeatedly experiences being alone without becoming overwhelmed.
That takes patience.
It takes consistency.
And it takes kindness.
Today We Celebrate Five Minutes
Will we celebrate ten minutes?
Absolutely.
Will we celebrate thirty minutes?
Without question.
Will we celebrate an hour?
You’d better believe it.
Every milestone matters because every milestone represents another step towards giving both the dog and their family their freedom back.
Five minutes may not sound like much.
But for one family this week…
It meant everything.
