Why “Well Trained” Dogs Can Still Struggle Emotionally

One of the most confusing experiences for dog guardians is hearing, or thinking:

“But my dog is well trained… so why is this still happening?”

Your dog can sit.
They can recall.
They walk nicely on lead.

And yet they still bark at visitors. Struggle when left alone. React on walks. Or find new environments overwhelming.

It can feel frustrating, confusing, and sometimes even disheartening.

In this week’s episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, I explain why training skills and emotional wellbeing are not the same thing, and why behaviour struggles don’t disappear just because a dog knows what to do.

Dogs don’t ignore cues because they’re stubborn.
They struggle because emotions change how the brain works.

We explore how fear, stress, and uncertainty affect behaviour, why calm responses can disappear in challenging environments, and how real progress happens when we support both skills and feelings together.

This episode is especially helpful if you’ve ever followed all the “right” advice but still felt stuck.

Because behaviour change isn’t just about what dogs learn.

It’s about how safe they feel while learning it.
