Most people think settle means lying still.
Lying on a bed. Staying quiet. Not moving around the house.
But a dog that looks settled is not always a dog that feels calm.
True settling is not about stillness at all.
It is about emotional safety.
Dogs who struggle to relax are not being difficult or ignoring training. They are showing us that their nervous system is still busy processing the environment around them. That is why teaching a genuine settle changes far more than just behaviour on a bed. It improves coping skills around visitors, supports independence at home and helps dogs feel safer making calm choices by themselves.
In this week’s episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, I explain the difference between real relaxation and behavioural suppression and why stillness does not always mean calmness.
You will learn what subtle body language signs tell us about whether a dog is actually relaxed, what enforced settling can look like from the dog’s perspective, and how positive reinforcement helps dogs choose calm instead of simply staying still.
If your dog stays on their bed but watches everything closely, struggles to switch off when people are moving around the house, or only settles when reminded repeatedly, this episode will help you understand what is happening and what to do next.
