Why Sit and Stay Won’t Fix Your Dog’s Anxiety

If your dog knows their commands but still struggles in real life situations, you’re not alone.

Many dog guardians spend months teaching cues like sit, stay, down, and heel, believing these behaviours will automatically create a calm and well-adjusted dog. Then something confusing happens.

The dog performs perfectly at home but falls apart outside.
They sit when asked, yet still react to other dogs.
They can hold a stay for minutes, but panic when left alone.

So what’s going on?

In this week’s episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, I unpack one of the biggest misunderstandings in dog training. The difference between trained behaviours and emotional resilience.

Commands are behaviours.
Coping is emotional regulation.

And those two things are not the same.

Dogs can perform a cue while still feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or anxious. In fact, focusing too heavily on obedience drills can sometimes mask the real issue rather than helping the dog learn how to cope.

We’ll explore:

• Why obedience behaviours don’t automatically create calm dogs
• How stress affects your dog’s ability to respond to cues
• The difference between performance and genuine emotional stability
• What actually helps dogs build confidence and coping skills

Understanding this distinction can completely change how you approach training.

If your dog “knows the commands” but still struggles with anxiety, reactivity, or separation issues, this episode will help you see why.
