Most people believe dog training exists to control behaviour.
Sit. Stay. Stop barking. Walk nicely.
But if training is only about controlling dogs, we’ve misunderstood its real purpose entirely.
In this week’s episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, I explore what training is actually for and why focusing purely on obedience can sometimes miss the most important part of the picture.
Training, when done properly, is communication. It’s how we help dogs understand the human world they’ve been brought into. It’s how we show them what works, what doesn’t, and how they can succeed without confusion or pressure.
We look at the difference between outcome-based thinking, where the only question is “did the dog do it?”, and learning-based thinking, where we ask a far more important question: “did the dog understand?”
When dogs feel safe to learn, behaviour changes naturally. Confidence grows. The relationship between dog and guardian becomes stronger, calmer, and far more cooperative.
This episode will help you rethink what training should feel like, both for you and for your dog.
