Why Your New Rescue Dog Doesn’t Need a Walk – Yet

Just brought home a rescue dog? You might be surprised to hear this, but don’t take them for a walk – not yet.

In this episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, certified trainer Jamie Watkinson-Harvey explains why those first two weeks should be walk-free. Instead of rushing into routines, we should focus on calm, gentle decompression, and give our dogs the time and space to feel safe.

Imagine moving to a new country and being dragged out sightseeing before you even know where the bathroom is. That’s how it feels for many rescue dogs when we take them out too soon.

Jamie shares why doing less builds more trust, and offers ideas for safe, enriching alternatives, like garden sniffing, scatter feeding, and just sitting quietly nearby.

If you’re adopting or fostering, this episode is your go-to guide for making those early days as stress-free as possible.
